Before Surgery Instructions

Eye Surgery Center of North Dallas

A member of our nursing staff will contact you two days prior to your surgery to obtain basic health history, review any pre-operative instructions, give final arrival time and answer any questions. Please make sure you are checking your answering machine, cell phone and voicemails as we will always leave a detailed voicemail regarding your pre-operative instructions in the case that we cannot get a hold of you.

A member of our business office staff will contact you about 3 days prior to surgery to go over financial responsibility. Payment is expected in full the day of surgery. Please click here for more information on Accepted Insurances and Payment options.

Laboratory Tests and Pre-Operative Clearance

Some procedures require lab work, diagnostic testing, or medical clearance for your anesthesiologist. If your surgeon has asked that you obtain any or all these items, it is important that the results of these tests be at the surgery center prior to day of surgery. Failure to obtain these tests can result in the canceling of your procedure. Please contact your doctor’s office if you have any questions.

Medications

Please talk to your surgeon or medical staff about any medications you are currently taking, especially medications for diabetes, heart, blood pressure or blood thinners. Be sure to mention any over the counter drugs, diet pills or herbal supplements.

Transportation

For your safety and protection, please arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours following surgery.

Taxi or Uber must have prior approval from your surgeon before the day of surgery.

Before your surgery

  • DO NOT EAT OR DRINK anything after Midnight. You will be given eating and drinking instructions during your Pre-OP call with one of our nursing staff.
  • Bathe or shower the morning of surgery to help minimize the chance of infection.
  • Brush your teeth the morning of surgery but do not swallow the water.
  • Do not consume alcohol 24 hours before or after your surgery.
  • Do not smoke or use any tobacco products after midnight the night before surgery.
  • Do not wear contact lenses or make-up.
  • False Eyelash and Eyelash Extensions MUST BE REMOVED prior to your day of surgery.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing – Please dress warmly, it is cold in the surgical area.
  • Leave jewelry and valuables at home.
  • Bring all paperwork your physician may have given you regarding your surgery.
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours following surgery. Anesthesia and sedation will make you drowsy for that period.
  • Please bring your insurance cards, Driver’s License, and method of payment.

When you Arrive

Please arrive promptly at the time given. Along with the paperwork given to you at the doctor’s office, you will have a few other consent forms to sign. After you have registered with the front desk, the nursing staff will be able to answer any questions regarding surgery as they call you back to the pre-Operative area. Please remember your arrival time IS NOT your surgery time. For most procedures, we expect you to be here a total of about 2 hours. This could vary based on specific procedures and/or unexpected complications that could arise during the operation.

Anesthesia

Anesthesia services are provided by Anesthesiologists highly qualified in all aspects of out-patient anesthesia. Your Anesthesiologist will evaluate you before surgery and answer any questions you may have. The appropriate type of anesthesia will be determined by your surgeon in consultation with the Anesthesiologist. Different levels of anesthesia are required for various procedures.

Recovery

Immediately following surgery, you will be taken to our recovery area where you will be offered water, juice, and a light snack. Our nursing staff will then call your driver and go over all post-operative instructions. The amount of time you spend in recovery depends to a great degree of the type of surgery and/or anesthesia you had. The medical staff will discharge you when they are assured you are in stable condition. However, you may still feel sleepy, slightly dizzy, or nauseated. These are possible (and normal) side effects of anesthesia and can last up to 24 hours.
